During root canal or endodontic treatment, the inflamed or infected pulp is removed and the inside of the tooth is carefully cleaned and disinfected, then filled and sealed with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha. Afterwards, the tooth is restored with a crown or filling for protection depending upon the amount of tooth that remains post treatment .

This procedure primarily focuses on the treatment of tooth which has lost its vitality that might have resulted from caries , trauma,attrition or deep restoration. Pain felt by the patient can vary from no pain or slight discomfort to severe pain that do not allow them to carry out their daily activities .There is a general misconception that while in pain the treatment should not be carried out but this treatment focuses on relieving patient from pain and retaining the natural tooth in function .
